The AI-Driven Leader - December 2024

Book Review: “The AI-Driven Leader: Harnessing AI to Make Faster, Smarter Decisions” by Geoff Woods

As someone with a deep interest in the intersection of leadership and artificial intelligence, I approached The AI-Driven Leader: Harnessing AI to Make Faster, Smarter Decisions by Geoff Woods with high hopes for a deep dive into how AI is shaping leadership and decision-making. Unfortunately, while the book presents itself as a guide to leveraging AI for smarter decision-making, it ultimately falls short of delivering meaningful insight into the topic of artificial intelligence.

Strengths

The book does offer value in its emphasis on leadership principles and project management strategies. Woods provides practical advice for leaders on how to structure their teams, set priorities, and execute projects effectively. For someone seeking general leadership advice, this book might be helpful, particularly for those new to leadership roles or project management frameworks. The writing is clear and concise, and the anecdotes are relatable and well-organized.

However, this is where the strengths of the book end. As a book marketed as a resource for AI-driven leadership, it fails to deliver on its promise.

Weaknesses

Lack of Depth on AI

The most glaring weakness of this book is its lack of focus on AI. The title suggests a thorough exploration of how artificial intelligence can empower leaders to make faster, smarter decisions. Unfortunately, the content barely scratches the surface of AI as a technology, its capabilities, or how it can be applied in a practical way to leadership challenges.

Readers expecting detailed discussions on machine learning, predictive analytics, natural language processing, or any tangible applications of AI will be disappointed. Instead of focusing on the “AI-driven” aspect, Woods spends the majority of the book talking about how to manage projects and be a more effective leader. While these are important skills, they are not specific to AI. For example, the book offers broad advice about setting goals, communicating with teams, and navigating ambiguity—topics that are valuable but hardly groundbreaking in the leadership genre. This lack of focus on AI makes the book feel misrepresented and disconnected from the expectations set by its title.

Missed Opportunities

Given the explosive growth of AI in recent years, there are numerous case studies, tools, and frameworks that could have been explored in this book. From AI-powered project management tools to real-world examples of how companies use AI to transform their decision-making processes, the possibilities are endless. Yet, these topics are glossed over or absent altogether. The book does not address the ethical implications of AI, the challenges of implementing AI-driven systems, or the potential risks and biases associated with AI—all critical considerations for leaders in the AI era.

Misleading Focus

Ultimately, the book feels like it could have been titled The Successful Project Leader: General Strategies for Managing Teams and Projects. If you remove the occasional mentions of AI, the book could be about any leadership topic. This misleading focus leaves readers who came for actionable AI insights feeling underwhelmed and frustrated.

If you are looking for a book that truly delves into AI and its applications in leadership, this is not the book for you. However, if you are in search of a basic guide to project management and leadership that lightly touches on AI as a buzzword, you might find some value in Woods’ advice.

Overall, The AI-Driven Leader is a missed opportunity to provide meaningful insight into one of the most transformative technologies of our time. It offers generic advice dressed up as AI expertise, leaving those truly interested in AI-driven leadership searching for more substantial resources elsewhere.
