Who Not How - January 2024

First off, I found Who Not How very intriguing because Dan Sullivan actually didn’t write this book. Benjamin Hardy did and this isn’t the first time these two have collaborated, they also did 10X is Better than 2X and I can’t help but believe that the way they do this is a bit disingenuous. To be fair, you can look at the title, it doesn’t say “BY” Dan Sullivan but the amazon advertisement does which I find, I don’t know just wrong.

Now I am not sure it changes my opinion, because at least in the Audible version they are clear about this, so I guess I just need to get over it.

Key Take Aways from Who Not How

There are 4 key freedoms the entrepreneurs should strive for.  I put in the “should” they say “that Motivate Succesful Entrepreneurs” and I know plenty of them and they are not ALL motivated by these four…

  1. Freedom of Time. You want to spend your working life doing what you really enjoy doing, and you also want the freedom to spend time not working too, so you can have a full life and pursue your other interests.
  2. Freedom of Money. You don’t want a ceiling on how much money you can make for doing a great job, for coming up with valuable new solutions or inventions. And if your efforts generate money, you don’t want anyone dictating how much of that money you can keep.
  3. Freedom of Relationship. There are certain people you love working with—both inside and outside your business—and you want to spend more and more of your time surrounded just by these people you click with, whom you appreciate and who appreciate you.
  4. Freedom of Purpose. This entrepreneurial company you’ve created is not just a job or a career; it’s actually a vehicle to all sorts of things that relate to your fundamental values and ideals in life. This allows you to have a tremendous sense of purpose for being on this planet. Entrepreneurs are the greatest contributors of money, opportunity, and capability to communities all over the world, in every field of human activity.

I think all of these are spot on and while some of these freedoms are fleeting, I would suggest I, for the most part, do what I want, when I want and I have no one asking me to change or try and alter my purpose…  As for money, aren’t we all looking for just a little bit more financial freedom, I digress.

Overall, this is a good read and as I write Enhanced Team Performance, I will likely use this book as a reference for certain concepts that I find very useful.  Definitely worth the read, but I still feel weird about the fact that Dan wrote one or two sentences, it was a “team” that actually got this book done.
